About Bergen County
Welcome > Local Info > town-1 Information ...

Bergen County is part of the New York metropolitan area and the Pascack Valley/Gateway region of New Jersey. Bergen County has over 70 unique municipalities under its jurisdiction. Hackensack, Alpine, Palisades Park, Paramus, Teaneck, Mahwah, Rutherford, Lyndhurst and Englewood Cliffs are among the larger and better-known communities of Bergen County; however, our county has a number of one-of-a-kind boroughs and townships for prospective residents to explore.

Lisa and Robert Hammerstein-- the "HammersTeam" serve clients throughout Bergen County, with special experience in the Pascack Valley boroughs of Hillsdale, Emerson, Westwood and River Vale, as well as the Township of Washington, Woodcliff Lake, Montvale and Park Ridge.

Bergen County is a major transportation hub in the Northeastern region of New Jersey. Many of the Gateway Region communities serve as bedroom communities for New York commuters, offering a suburban getaway from the stress of city living while offering city amenities and career opportunities. Bergen County is geologically unique and offers breathtaking natural beauty in such outdoor vistas as the cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades. One of four original New Jersey counties, modern-day Bergen County caters to residents from all walks of life, offering an impressive diversity of conveniences, services and amenities for residents to enjoy.

Prior to colonial settlement, the lands of Bergen County were primarily occupied by the Lenni-Lenape Indians of the Eastern Algonquin Nation. From colonial times until just after the Civil War, much of Bergen County was agrarian, with commerce, industry and expansion in the area arriving with the Hackensack and New York Railroad.

In addition to numerous locations designated on the National Historic Register, Bergen County residents may explore the area's history at New Bridge Landing, Hermitage Ho-Ho-Kus, Old Hook Cemetery, Baylor Massacre site, New Jersey Naval Museum, Camp Merritt, Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey, Easton Tower, Gethsemane Cemetery, Maywood Station Museum and Pascack Historical Society Museum, among many other sites of historic interest located convenient to our county.

Our residents enjoy their convenient location to one of the world's premier cities without sacrificing the natural beauty of the region--Bergen County's communities remain under an hour's drive from New Jersey's majestic mountains, bountiful forests, pristine beaches and a world-class park system that maintains over 9,000 acres of public lands to explore and enjoy at your leisure. The national, state, county and municipal parks of Bergen County offer amenities that include golf courses, horseback riding stables, environmental centers, a zoo and ample space for camping, picnicking, sports and relaxing. Darlington County Park, Bergen County Zoological Park, Ramapo Mountain Reservation, McFaul Environmental Center, Wyckoff Campgaw Mountain Reservation and Ski Area, Palisades Interstate Park, Garretson Farm, Washington Spring Garden, Wortendyke Barn, Meadowlands Environment Center, Tenafly Nature Center, the Puffin Foundation and Dreyfuss Planetarium are just a sampling of the natural attractions available in Bergen County.

Culturally and socially, Bergen County benefits from its closeness to New York City, affording its residents a cosmopolitan outlook and big-city adventures without trading off the small-town values and quiet intimacy of its communities. Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, New Jersey Children's Museum, Bergen Performing Arts Center, American Stage Playhouse, Little Firehouse Theatre, Bergen Museum of Art & Science, Fort Lee Film Commission, MetLife Stadium, the Izod Center, Meadowlands Racetrack and the future site of American Dream Meadowlands are area centers of interest that host a diverse array of cultural events, from film, theatre and dance to art, sports events and concerts.

Shoppers can spend leisurely afternoons bargain-hunting at the numerous malls and centers of commerce in Bergen County: Paramus Park Mall, the Shops at Riverside Square, Garden State Plaza, the Outlets at Bergen Town Center, the Fashion Center, H Mart and Mitsuwa Marketplace offer shoppers everything from locally owned shops and boutiques to nationally-known retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Swarovski, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Steve Madden, H&M, Louis Vuitton, Juicy Couture, Stuart Weitzman, Ed Hardy, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Kiehl's and Apple.

For families and students, one of the main draws of Bergen County are our highly ranked public school systems, many of which have been nationally recognized for their excellence. Our students benefit from innovative programs, exceptional resources and facilities and civic commitment to quality education, allowing them to consistently achieve in the highest percentile. Bergen County Academies, our county's public magnet high school, has been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report as one the country's leading educational facilities.

In addition to the myriad of colleges available in nearby New York City, local institutions of upper education include Bergen Community College, Berkeley College, Dover Business College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Felician College, Saint Peter's College and Ramapo College.

Whether you decide to explore our natural beauty in Park Ridge or Palisades Park, visit the historic sites of Westwood, enjoy the shopping and dining destinations of Hackensack and Paramus, or enjoy the quiet pace of life in River Vale, there's fun, excitement, leisure history and nature's bounty waiting for you in Bergen County. Close to everything and away from it all, Bergen County 's communities are your Gateway—come discover why our county gives its residents the best of both worlds!

Real Estate Tips
Accepting An Offer >Responding to Low Offers

The beginning of negotiations is usually the end of many months of hard work for the buyer or seller. The work ahead requires skill in order to maintain a strong position.

Sellers can lose their advantage if they do not counter an offer that a buyer has made. Even if the opening offer is beneath what the seller feels is reasonable, it is advisable for the seller to respond with a slight reduction from the asking price. The most important component in negotiating is good communication.

The best way to handle a low offer is to counter it with definite terms that are favorable to the seller. A counter offer has two advantages: 1) it keeps the buyer interested, and 2) it moves the negotiation forward and gives the buyer the opportunity to submit another offer that the seller is more likely to prefer.
